Monash Sports Award recipients 2009
CONGRATULATIONS to the two Monash Touchers who received very special awards at the Monash Sports Award dinner last year.
Ben Coupe (our current President) received a Half Blue Award (the second highest sporting achievement award that can be received at University) to join an elite group of 9 Monash Touchers who have also received either a Full Blue or Half Blue. Elies El Chaar was also called forward during the festivities to receive the Monash Coach of the Year Award. This is a highly prestigious award given to a Monash Uni coach who has shown dedication and excellence in their role and who, as a result of this, has enabled their team or athlete to achieve above and beyond any previous efforts. This is the first time a coach from touch football has been awarded this title and Elies could not have been more deserving after bringing the Monash Womens AUG team from a low second division ranking to Silver in second division, 4th place in first division and then in 2009 a Bronze Medal in first division at AUG (in his 3 consecutive years of coaching). This outstanding contribution is only one of many that Elies has made to our club; he has also committed numerous hours into the coaching and development of our Mens club members and goes out of his way to encourage and support players on all levels in local park, interstate and representative tournaments.Monash Touch would like to congratulate these two club members on their outstanding achievements!! A few words from Elies is response to his University Award: After joining the Monash Touch Club as a coach in 2007 and taking on the women’s team, I really didn’t think id still be involved after 3 years with the club. But each time I try think about moving on I can’t. Coaching at Monash allows you to do just that...coach. With the committee and volunteers doing all the back work, it just makes it so much easier to come in and coach. The players attitudes are great. Everyone is wanting to listen, learn and develop. The Monash club is by far the best touch club in Melbourne. That’s my opinion. There is one thing Monash do and do well....they play hard and have a heap of fun doing it. In my time here as a coach and player I’d like to thank Pat Car for not only getting me involved but making my coaching life easier off the field. Richie Johnston for assisting me and giving me a 2nd opinion on a lot of different areas from not only coaching but to playing as well and Lano Fonua who also was involved in getting me into the club. Also just a quick thanks to Vinnie, Coupie and Stevie who along with Richie play most of their touch with me and watching them develop as players drives me to better myself as a player also. Go Monash - Elies
